Smooth Moves: How to Keep Your Furry Friends Happy

Moving with pets can be a challenging experience for both you and your furry friends. Having a plan in place and staying mindful of your pet’s comfort level can mitigate some of the stress associated with a new environment.  To ensure a smooth move, here are some helpful tips:

Visit the vet

PLAN AHEAD

  • Visit the Vet: Schedule a vet appointment before the move to ensure your pets are healthy and up to date on vaccinations. Obtain copies of their medical records and ask for recommendations for a vet in your new area.
  • Update Identification: Ensure your pets’ identification tags and microchip information are updated with your new address and contact details. This is crucial in case they get lost during the move.

PREPARE AN OVERNIGHT KIT

  • Essentials: Pack a kit with your pets’ essentials, such as food, water, bowls, medications, toys, bedding, and litter supplies. Having these items easily accessible will help your pets feel more comfortable during the move and in the first few days at the new home.
  • Familiar Items: Include a few of their favorite toys or a blanket with your scent to provide comfort and familiarity during the transition.

KEEP PETS SECURE ON MOVING DAY

  • Safe Space: As you are moving out of your old home, keep your pets in a quiet, secure room or a designated pet area to prevent them from getting stressed or escaping during the commotion. Make sure the room is well-ventilated, and provide them with their bed, toys, and water.
  • Transport Safely: If you’re moving by car, transport your pets in a well-ventilated carrier or crate to ensure their safety. For long-distance moves, plan for regular breaks to allow them to stretch, hydrate, and relieve themselves.

INTRODUCE THEM TO THEIR NEW HOME GRADUALLY

Before letting your pets roam freely in your new home, ensure that the space is safe for them. Check for potential hazards like loose wires, toxic plants, or open windows. Secure fences and gates if you have a yard, and make sure they can’t escape.

  • Start Slowly: When you arrive at your new home, introduce your pets to one room at a time. This allows them to acclimate to the new environment without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Maintain Routines: Try to keep their feeding, walking, and playtime routines as consistent as possible. Familiar routines provide comfort and help them adjust to the new surroundings.

    Explore together

HELP PETS ADJUST TO THEIR NEW ENVIRONMENT

  • Explore Together: Spend time with your pets in the new home, allowing them to explore at their own pace. Walk them around the neighborhood to familiarize them with new sights, smells, and sounds.
  • Provide Extra Attention: Moving can be stressful for pets, so offer them extra attention and reassurance during the transition. Play with them, offer treats, and give them plenty of affection to help ease their anxiety.

BE PATIENT AND UNDERSTANDING

  • Watch for Stress Signs: Monitor your pets for signs of stress or anxiety, such as changes in appetite, behavior, or bathroom habits. If your pets seem particularly stressed, consider using calming products like pheromone sprays or consult your vet for advice.
  • Give Them Time: It may take time for your pets to fully adjust to the new environment. Be patient and provide a stable, loving atmosphere to help them settle in.
